The City of Homewood is now set to transform a very visible transportation landscape after being awarded a $2 million grant aimed at enhancing access management, traffic signals, and sidewalks along the US Highway 31 stretch between Ventura Avenue and Old Montgomery Highway. This project was one of 26 selected to receive funding across the state of Alabama, announced by Governor Kay Ivey. You can read Governor Ivey's press release HERE.
The project falls under the purview of the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II (ATRIP-II), a pivotal initiative steered by the Rebuild Alabama Act. This program mandates the allocation of a minimum of $30 million from new gas tax revenue to fund local projects on the Alabama state highway system. Such endeavors underscore the state's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and fostering local development.
Kimley-Horn provided consulting services on the application that encompasses a range of improvements set to make a huge impact on traffic flow, safety, and pedestrian accessibility. Safety enhancements at median openings and signalized intersections, alongside a reduction in driveway-intersection conflicts, are anticipated to significantly mitigate traffic risks. Simultaneously, the addition of sidewalks and the optimization of roadway crossings are poised to heighten pedestrian safety and accessibility. Concrete islands and curbing will facilitate traffic channelization and the implementation of right-in/right-out access, further bolstering traffic efficiency and safety.
There will be opportunities for public input. As soon as we have the information for how you can be involved, we will let you know.
