Local Flood Hazard Areas
Homewood’s local flood hazard areas are primarily along Shades Creek, its tributaries, and Griffin Brook. Historically, the areas most affected by flooding within the city are along Griffin Brook and along tributaries of Shades Creek, although all locations are subject to flooding.

Homewood’s
Engineering & Zoning Department can assist you in determining if your property is in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). During major storm events flash flooding can occur when drainage areas overflow and flood. If you are purchasing a home that is located within the SFHA and have a mortgage loan backed by federal funds, you must obtain flood insurance. Contact the City’s Engineering & Zoning Department 205-332-6800 or review the current FEMA Flood Hazard Mapping for Homewood through the Office of Water Resources website.

Flood Safety

Flood safety is crucial. Flood and flash flood warnings may be broadcast via radio, television, and local government channels. Understanding how to respond during a flood can minimize property damage and safeguard personal well-being.

The following tips can keep you and your family from harm

  • Do not drive through flood waters. Currents are deceptive – six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet.
  • Do not drive around barriers – the road or bridge may be washed out.
  • If a flood warning is posted and you are advised to evacuate, move immediately to a safe area before access is cut off by flood water.
  • Shut off all gas and water valves.
  • Have a departure plan in case of an emergency.

Flood Insurance
Contact your property insurance agent to see if you are covered for flood damage or if a flood insurance policy would help you. Even if you are not in the mapped floodplain, you may be subject to flooding from local drainage. In either case, flood insurance can be a good investment because most homeowners insurance policies do not cover damage caused by surface water flooding. Flood insurance applies to renters as well, so renters should look into flood insurance to cover their contents.

Property Protection

Talk to us about protecting your house or business. There are ways to modify your building to minimize flood damage. Where flooding is shallow, measures such as small flood walls, regrading the yard, and flood-proofing the walls or utilities can be relatively inexpensive. Where flooding is deep, a building may need to be elevated.
